My Memory Chest was born from a conversation with a close friend shortly after the loss of her father.

As she reflected on her grief, she said something that stayed with me:

"There are so many questions I wish I had asked my dad."

At that time, my own father had recently recovered from a serious illness he had contracted whilst abroad. For a period, we genuinely thought we might lose him. Hearing my friend's words made me realise how fortunate I was to still have the opportunity to ask my father the questions I had never asked, hear the stories I had never fully listened to, and preserve the memories that only he could share.

With my father's permission, I sat down with him and recorded his life story.

When the film was finished, my siblings and I gathered with Dad to watch it together. Over the course of 45 minutes, we laughed, cried and listened to stories we had never heard before. At the end, I surprised him with a bloopers reel filled with outtakes and funny moments from the filming. Dad was completely caught off guard, and seeing him quietly giggling in his arm chair remains one of my favourite memories.

Thankfully, we were blessed with another seven precious years with him.

When my father passed away in 2024 following heart complications, that recording became one of our family's most treasured possessions.

For his funeral, I created a shorter version of the film to accompany his eulogy. In many ways, it became a self-eulogy. Through his own words, Dad spoke directly to his family, friends and loved ones about his life, his experiences and the people who meant the most to him.

The response was overwhelming. Guests told us they had never experienced anything so personal, moving and meaningful. It allowed them to hear his voice, see his expressions and connect with his story one final time.

Our immediate family continue to keep the full version privately. It contains more personal memories, reflections and stories that remain a cherished part of our family history.

That experience showed me the true value of preserving memories before they are lost. Every family has stories worth saving. Every person carries memories, wisdom, laughter and experiences that future generations may one day wish they had recorded.
